May 12th, 2026 Municipal Elections and BUUSD Revote

On Tuesday May 12th, 2026 Barre City will have their town meeting day elections. We will elect our Mayor and one City Councilor from each ward. There is also the BUUSD Budget Revote, Barre City Municipal Budget, and additional items. Below are links to information on the ballots.

Municipal

Barre City voters will decide on the FY27 municipal budget on May 12. The proposed $15.8 million budget would raise $11.3 million through property taxes, an estimated 5% increase, while using $255,000 from fund balance to help manage the tax rate.

The budget restores the Barre Bees downtown bike patrol, rebuilds the Recreation Department, supports local partners, and increases the paving budget to $800,000, including work on several city streets and milling South Main Street. It also identifies nearly $590,000 in savings and new non-tax revenue, though bulky waste and tire disposal events remain unfunded. Click the picture to be directed to the City website.

BUUSD Budget Revote

BUUSD is bringing a revised $57.4 million school budget back to voters on May 12 after the March budget failed. The new budget increases overall spending by $1.5 million, or 2.73%, but the ballot will show an 11.08% increase in per-pupil spending, a number officials say is driven largely by declining enrollment and has caused voter confusion.

The revised plan cuts $100,000 for summer school, shifts some positions back to grant funding, shares the school resource officer position, and uses stabilization and fund balance money to soften the tax impact. The projected equalized tax rate increase is now just under 5%, though Barre City’s reappraisal makes the actual property tax impact harder to predict.

We are not suggesting to vote for or against but we do want to let Barre City voters know that the information on the mailer the BUUSD sent was not reflective of the assessment we are going through. We believe that the actual impact will be $100-$200 per $100,000 of assessed value. Please click the Learn More button below to be directed to the BUUSD budget page for detailed information
